This homeschooling adventure is a bit confusing. We started out structured and more 'school at home' with workbooks, daily lessons and things like that. Ariz liked the worksheets and but after a while she would get upset when I left her alone to do them, I then figured it was the one on one time and attention she enjoyed not the actual work.
Then we tried Waldorf style learning, we started off with a preschool curriculum that was kind of just establishing a rhythm to the day and a lot of play. Ariz found it boring but they did love our morning circle time which is a few song and dance numbers LOL! so we have inconsistently kept that a part of the day. Both Ariz and Alex found it way to slow for them, they were bored a lot and with boredom came accidents and finding themselves in trouble :( .
Now....we are just winging it. I've actually read that what we are 'doing' right now is called 'Unschooling". Ariz is really into reading and writing and Alex is into coloring and playing out real life scenes with toys and figures.
Ariz gets up each morning and grabs her notebook and starts writing, she practices writing words now that she is bored with mastering her and her families names :). She also plays with her sight word flashcards and reads every word within her sight when we are out and about. What I love most is that she picks up my 'real' books and skims through them looking for words she knows and sounds out words she doesn't know and asks for help with ones shes never seen. Right now she is hauling around "The Poetry of Zen", it cracks me up, my little 4 year old girl hauling around such a book. Also she is improving in reading comprehension. Of course she is a blank when it comes to poetry's meaning but she gets simpler books like Dr. Sues and what not.
Alex likes to play out dramatic action scenes with his toys, I love how he 'fixes' problems and how after the toys have accidents he comforts them. He is just loving drawing now that I have given him access to markers (uh...oh). He wasn't having any of the 'baby' block crayons stuff. He is starting to draw figures and calling them people instead of just making marks that were just color experiments. I tried to make some math games for him but he isn't interested in it right now (mind you he is only 2) so I'm not pushing it right now because he is the type of person that resists my persistence :( .
They occasionally play Loteria together. Ariz is always the caller. She is getting better at pronouncing words in Spanish, it makes me so happy.
I'm just winging it right now with her, I'm still trying to figure out if we are gonna do "Valley Oaks" which is a charter school that caters to homeschoolers or just keep up with unschooling. Time will tell.
